Overview
Using Zapier, you can connect Lawmatics and LeanLaw so that new contacts and matters in Lawmatics automatically create the corresponding client and matter records in LeanLaw. This eliminates duplicate data entry between your legal CRM and billing systems.
Beta Notice: The LeanLaw Zapier app is currently in beta and is not fully supported by the LeanLaw support team. We welcome your feedback at product@myleanlaw.com as we continue to expand functionality ahead of a full release. Known limitations include dynamically assigning clients and matters to newly created time entries, depending on how the Zap is configured.
What You'll Need
A LeanLaw account with API access
A Lawmatics account
A Zapier account (free or paid)
How It Works
Zapier connects Lawmatics and LeanLaw using a simple "trigger and action" workflow called a Zap. When something happens in Lawmatics (the trigger), Zapier automatically performs an action in LeanLaw.
Here are some common workflows:
Zap | Trigger (Lawmatics) | Action (LeanLaw) |
Push Clients | Contact Created — triggers when a new contact is created | Create Client in LeanLaw |
Push Matters | Matter Added — triggers when a new matter is created | Create Matter in LeanLaw |
Note: Lawmatics triggers use polling, so new records are picked up within a few minutes rather than instantly.
Getting Started
Log in to Zapier and click Create a Zap
Set the trigger: Search for Lawmatics, select it, and choose the trigger (e.g., Contact Created or Matter Added)
Connect your Lawmatics account and test the trigger
Set the action: Search for LeanLaw, select it, and choose the corresponding action (e.g., Create Client or Create Matter)
Connect your LeanLaw account using your API key
Map the fields from Lawmatics to LeanLaw (see tips below)
Test the Zap and turn it on
Field Mapping Tips
Lawmatics Contact → LeanLaw Client
Map the Lawmatics contact Name to the LeanLaw client Name
Lawmatics also has a Matter Converted trigger if you only want to sync contacts that have been converted from prospects to active matters
Lawmatics Matter → LeanLaw Matter
Map the Lawmatics matter Name to the LeanLaw matter Name
LeanLaw requires a Client, Responsible User, and Matter Type (Hourly, Flat, or Contingency) — use LeanLaw's built-in dropdown pickers to select these
You can use a Find Contact search step in Lawmatics or a lookup step in LeanLaw to link the matter's contact to the correct LeanLaw client
