Overview

Using Zapier, you can connect Clio and LeanLaw so that new contacts, matters, and time activities in Clio automatically create the corresponding records in LeanLaw. This eliminates duplicate data entry between your practice management and billing systems.

Beta Notice: The LeanLaw Zapier app is currently in beta and is not fully supported by the LeanLaw support team. We welcome your feedback at product@myleanlaw.com as we continue to expand functionality ahead of a full release.

What You'll Need

  • A LeanLaw account with API access

  • A Clio account

  • A Zapier account (free or paid)

How It Works

Zapier connects Clio and LeanLaw using a simple "trigger and action" workflow called a Zap. When something happens in Clio (the trigger), Zapier automatically performs an action in LeanLaw.

Here are some common workflows:

Zap

Trigger (Clio)

Action (LeanLaw)

Push Clients

New Contact — triggers instantly when a contact is created

Create Client in LeanLaw

Push Matters

New Matter — triggers instantly when a matter is created

Create Matter in LeanLaw

Push Time

New Activity — triggers instantly when a time activity is logged

Create Time Entry in LeanLaw

All three Clio triggers fire instantly, so your LeanLaw records are created in real time.

Getting Started

  1. Log in to Zapier and click Create a Zap

  2. Set the trigger: Search for Clio, select it, and choose the trigger (e.g., New Contact, New Matter, or New Activity)

  3. Connect your Clio account and test the trigger

  4. Set the action: Search for LeanLaw, select it, and choose the corresponding action (e.g., Create Client, Create Matter, or Create Time Entry)

  5. Connect your LeanLaw account using your API key

  6. Map the fields from Clio to LeanLaw (see tips below)

  7. Test the Zap and turn it on

Field Mapping Tips

Clio Contact → LeanLaw Client

  • Map the Clio contact Name to the LeanLaw client Name

  • Clio distinguishes between Person Contacts and Company Contacts — both can be mapped to a LeanLaw client

Clio Matter → LeanLaw Matter

  • Map the Clio matter Description to the LeanLaw matter Name

  • LeanLaw requires a Client, Responsible User, and Matter Type (Hourly, Flat, or Contingency) — use LeanLaw's built-in dropdown pickers to select these

  • If you're also syncing contacts, you can use a Clio Find Matter step to look up the matter's client and map it to the correct LeanLaw client

Clio Activity → LeanLaw Time Entry

  • Map the Clio activity Date and time values to the LeanLaw time entry Date and Hours

  • LeanLaw requires a Matter and User — use the dropdown pickers to select these, or map them from Clio data using a lookup step
