Overview
Using Zapier, you can connect Filevine and LeanLaw so that new contacts and projects in Filevine automatically create the corresponding client and matter records in LeanLaw. This eliminates duplicate data entry between your case management and billing systems.
Beta Notice: The LeanLaw Zapier app is currently in beta and is not fully supported by the LeanLaw support team. We welcome your feedback at product@myleanlaw.com as we continue to expand functionality ahead of a full release. Known limitations include dynamically assigning clients and matters to newly created time entries, depending on how the Zap is configured.
What You'll Need
A LeanLaw account with API access
A Filevine account
A Zapier account (free or paid)
How It Works
Zapier connects Filevine and LeanLaw using a simple "trigger and action" workflow called a Zap. When something happens in Filevine (the trigger), Zapier automatically performs an action in LeanLaw.
Here are some common workflows:
Zap | Trigger (Filevine) | Action (LeanLaw) |
Push Clients | New Event — triggers instantly when a new contact event occurs | Create Client in LeanLaw |
Push Matters | New Event — triggers instantly when a new project event occurs | Create Matter in LeanLaw |
Filevine uses a single New Event trigger that fires instantly for different event types. When setting up your Zap, you'll select the specific event type you want to listen for (e.g., a new contact being created or a new project being created).
Getting Started
Log in to Zapier and click Create a Zap
Set the trigger: Search for Filevine, select it, and choose New Event
Connect your Filevine account, then select the event type (e.g., new contact or new project)
Test the trigger to confirm events are coming through
Set the action: Search for LeanLaw, select it, and choose the corresponding action (e.g., Create Client or Create Matter)
Connect your LeanLaw account using your API key
Map the fields from Filevine to LeanLaw (see tips below)
Test the Zap and turn it on
Field Mapping Tips
Filevine Contact → LeanLaw Client
Map the Filevine contact Name fields to the LeanLaw client Name
Filevine refers to people and organizations as "Contacts" — these map to LeanLaw clients
Filevine Project → LeanLaw Matter
Map the Filevine project Name to the LeanLaw matter Name
Filevine uses "Project" where other platforms use "Case" or "Matter"
LeanLaw requires a Client, Responsible User, and Matter Type (Hourly, Flat, or Contingency) — use LeanLaw's built-in dropdown pickers to select these
You can use a Find Contact search step in Filevine or a lookup step in LeanLaw to link the project's contact to the correct LeanLaw client
