LeanLaw offers flexible billing rate options to meet the needs of your firm. You can set standard rates for users, override rates on matters, or apply more advanced configurations such as rate groups.
This article explains how to set and adjust rates across LeanLaw.
Understanding Rate Types
LeanLaw supports several types of billing rates:
User Standard Rate – Default rate assigned to a user
Matter Rate Override – Custom rate for a specific matter
Rate Groups – Advanced rate structures applied across users or matters
Rates are applied in a hierarchy, with matter-level overrides taking precedence over user standard rates.
Setting a User’s Standard Rate
1. Open Settings
Click the gear icon ⚙️ in the top-right corner.
2. Open Users
Select Users from the left-hand menu.
3. Select a User
Click on the user’s name to open their profile.
This opens a slide-in panel on the right side of your screen.
4. Open the Rates Tab
Navigate to the Rates tab within the user panel.
5. Enter or Update the Standard Rate
Enter the user’s default billing rate
Make any necessary adjustments
6. Save Changes
Click Save at the bottom of the panel.
If no standard rate is set, the default will be $0.
Adjusting Rates on a Matter
You can override a user’s standard rate for a specific matter.
1. Open the Matter
Navigate to the relevant matter.
2. Access Matter Settings
Open the matter’s billing or rate settings.
3. Set a Matter-Specific Rate
Enter a custom rate for the user on that matter
Save your changes
Matter-level rates will override the user’s standard rate for that matter only.
Using Rate Groups
Rate Groups allow you to apply structured pricing across users or matters.
Typical use cases include:
Different rates by client
Tiered pricing structures
Standardized firm-wide billing models
For more details, see: Understanding Non-Standard Rates and Rate Groups
When to Use Each Rate Type
Use User Standard Rates for default billing across all matters
Use Matter Overrides for client-specific pricing
Use Rate Groups for more complex or repeatable pricing structures
Best Practices
Set a standard rate for every billable user to avoid $0 entries
Use matter overrides sparingly to maintain consistency
Regularly review rates to ensure billing accuracy
Align rate setup with your firm’s billing policies
What’s New in the User Experience
User rates are now managed within the Rates tab in the user panel
The user profile opens in a slide-in panel instead of a pop-up
Rate settings are easier to access without navigating through multiple windows
All functionality remains the same—just easier to find and manage.
