Each matter can have a standard or non-standard default rate. You can also set a different rate for each time entry.
Setting Rates Across All Matters:
Navigate to Settings -> My Settings -> My Rates to set your primary and an alternative rate. These rates are typically set on an hourly basis.
Updating Rates for a Specific Matter:
Click on the Matters tab at the top of LeanLaw and search for the specific matter you want to update.
Click on the preferred matter to access its details.
Go to the Billing and Rates tab and adjust the hourly rate as needed.
Click Save Changes at the bottom of your screen to apply your updates.
The rate you set will automatically apply to all time entries for that matter unless you choose otherwise.
Update WIP Rates
Update all time entries that are not on draft or billed invoices.
Click on the Matters tab at the top of LeanLaw and search for the specific matter you want to update.
Click on the preferred matter to access its details.
Go to the Billing and Rates tab and adjust the hourly rate as needed.
Click Update WIP Rates
Important: When updating WIP rates, ensure that any time entries or billable items you want to update are marked as Ready to Bill. Items not in Ready to Bill status (e.g., draft/approved) won’t reflect the new rates.
Changing Rates for Specific Entries:
To change the rate for a specific time entry, click the Advanced button at the top of the time entry. This lets you override the default rate and apply a non-standard rate for that entry.
Rate Groups:
LeanLaw's new "Rate Groups" feature simplifies rate management for law firms, saving time and reducing errors. It allows for easy setup of standard rate groups that can be applied to any time entries, with customizable options for specific clients and matters.

Current Rate Groups Beta Users
If you're using LeanLaw's Rate Groups beta, here’s how to adjust your rate groups:
Firm Level
Navigate to Settings -> Firm Setup and select Rate Groups.
To create a new rate group, click the green "New Rate Group" button at the top right. Note that once created, you cannot withdraw from the beta.
To edit an existing rate group, click the three dots next to it and select "Edit".
You can also set any rate group as the firm's default.
Matter Level
To change a matter's rate group, go to Matters, search for and select the matter, then go to the Billing and Rates tab.
Under Type of Billing, click the "Rate Group" link, choose your desired rate group, and click save to apply your changes.
