Welcome to Lean Insights, LeanLaw's modern reporting solution. This video will show you how to add data into an item for custom report building.

Lean Insights – Report Building Instructions

Adding Data to Your Monthly Expense Report

1. Introduction

In this section of the Lean Insights Report Building Training, you will learn how to add data to the items in your report.
By this point, you should already have:

  • A Date Filter added to your report

  • A Table added to your report

These items will initially display a message that says “Drag and drop data onto your report.”

2. Add Data to the Date Filter

Step 1: Choose Your Dataset

  1. Go to the Available Data Sets panel.

  2. Because this report focuses on expenses, select the Activities dataset.

Step 2: Add a Date Field

  1. Locate Invoice Date in the Activities dataset.

  2. Drag it into the Date/Time box inside the Date Filter item.

  3. When the target area turns green, release the field to place it.

  4. You can now modify or refine your date filter as needed.

3. Add Data to the Table

Step 1: Drag & Drop Data Columns

From the Activities dataset, drag the following fields into the middle of the table, one at a time:

  • Client Name

  • Matter Name

  • User Initials

  • Billable Activity Amount

  • Activity Type

  • Invoice Status

Each time you drag in a field:

  • Drop it when the center area turns green

  • A new column will appear in the table

You can resize the table to better view the data as needed.

4. Add Data to a Bar Chart

Step 1: Add a Measure

  1. Drag Billable Activity Amount into the Measure (green) box.

  2. The bar chart will automatically sum these values.

Step 2: Add a Category

  1. Drag User Initials into the Category field.

  2. A separate bar will appear for each user.

Step 3: (Optional) Group the Chart

If you want to group the chart by another dimension—for example Practice Area:

  1. Drag Practice Area into the Group By field.

  2. The chart will now show bars broken down by both User and Practice Area.

Note: This may create many bars, depending on how many values exist.

5. Wrap-Up

You’ve now learned how to:

  • Add data to a date filter

  • Add columns to a table

  • Build a bar chart using measures, categories, and grouping
