What’s new in LeanLaw this month?

Unassigned rows in reports

Have you ever opened the Productivity by Client and Matter report, seen that one of your clients has $300 in expenses, clicked on that client, and then been unable to reconcile the expenses among the listed users? The reason is that this report, among others, didn't have an "Unassigned" row to show expenses and fixed fees which do not have a user assigned--until now!

This small change helps you reconcile one level of a report with another, and helps you to locate any fixed fees or expenses may have been unintentionally left unassigned.

Desktop tracker improvements

We've updated our lightweight desktop tracker. Find this application on the Tools page in your firm settings.

  • Matter sorting now matches the alphabetical order you're used to seeing on our web application.

  • Fixed an issue where the Hours field would appear to be blank when editing time entries.

  • Clarified the language in several areas of the application.

Update history

As always, we’ve also been hard at work to squash bugs and improve the user experience. Here are the patch notes for our development.

April 28, 2023

  • Added an Unassigned row to the second level of the Productivity by Client and Matter report. This row addresses an inconsistency between the first and second level of the report, which would occur if a client had expenses, but those expenses were not assigned to any user. This is the first of many reports in which we're addressing this inconsistency.

  • Fixed an issue where expenses that were assigned to customers in QuickBooks would in some cases fail to save changes if you then assigned the expense to one of that customer's matters in LeanLaw.

  • Added a protection to the matter level Billing & Rates page to prevent users from assigning greater than 100% combined Origination.

  • Fixed an issue where the Administrative Fee preview in step-by-step invoicing wasn't being applied to fixed fees, causing an incorrect preview.

  • Fixed an issue where users without the Create/View Clients and Matters permission could view the Clients and Matters pages if they began creating a fixed fee and then closed the window.

April 27, 2023

  • Desktop tracker update: Matter sorting is now alphabetical to match the sorting you see in the web application. Fixed an issue where the Hours field would blank out when editing a time entry. Made several typo corrections and text adjustments for clarity.

April 25, 2023

  • Fixed an issue where the trust retainer information and hours summary would not update if a user made changes to an invoice's hours and then used Approve & Submit to immediately send it to QuickBooks.

April 24, 2023

  • Fixed an issue that prevented certain time entries from being edited.

April 21, 2023

  • Fixed an issue that caused invoices to have no memo if the firm did not have Gravity Legal enabled.

  • Fixed an issue where the Hours Summary would sometimes round up a user's rate if their rate had cents in it.

  • Changed the behavior when a user's initials are deleted. Before, we would treat this as intentional and leave the Initials blank. Now, we will reset the user's initials for invoicing and matters back to the default (their full name).

April 18, 2023

  • Fixed an issue in the Collected by Originating report where the Group By User checkbox would cause no data to appear if a user in the report would have no collection data to show.

  • Fixed an issue that caused some time entries to not have a rate in the Fixed Fee Profitability report.

  • Fixed an issue on the Calendar page that caused odd start and end times in firms using .25 hour increments.

  • Fixed an issue on the Calendar page where, if a user was on multiday view and clicked the same day on the calendar 3 times, their day selection would shift ahead to another date.

April 15, 2023

  • Fixed an issue with Live Trust where partial trust payments on matters without Evergreen weren't deducting from the payment link balance.

April 14, 2023

  • Fixed an issue where Working Allocation settings weren't being acknowledged on fixed fees.

  • Fixed an issue where fixed fees dated in the future couldn't be made into an invoice even if the user changed their time period filter to be able to view them.

  • Fixed an issue where recurring fixed fees wouldn't show their recurring status. Note: fixed fees will still only show their recurrence period if they have an upcoming recurrence period, so billed recurring fixed fees or recurring fixed fees that are currently on their last recurrence will still not show a recurrence value on the UI.

April 12, 2023

  • Fixed an issue that caused errors when attempting to use step-by-step invoicing.

  • Fixed an issue where the Period Report's "Collected Total" value wasn't including expenses.

  • Fixed an issue where the Trust Deposit modal would sometimes prepopulate with the last client viewed from the Trust Account page.

April 10, 2023

  • Addressed an issue where invoices a hundred or more matters would be rejected from QuickBooks for having memos greater than 1000 characters. Now, the "Matters Total" value will be automatically removed from the invoice if it would cause the memo to surpass 1000 characters.

  • Fixed an issue where Automatic Client and Matter IDs settings would override the user's manual inputs when creating new clients or matters.

  • Fixed an issue where a certain filter combination on the Expenses page would show the wrong entries.

  • Changed the behavior of the new time entry form that automatically populates when you create a time entry on the Time Entries page. By popular demand, this form will now no longer retain the Hours value of the previous time entry.

  • Fixed an issue where changing the Archived filter multiple times on the Ready to Bill report could cause the endlessly load data.

April 7, 2023

  • Fixed an issue where fixed fees wouldn't show a date in the WIP Detail report if they were created without one assigned. Fixed fees on this report now show the date they were billed if they never had a date assigned, just like on the Fixed Fees tab.

  • Fixed an issue where the CC On Responsible setting wouldn't set the responsible attorney to the cc address if the invoice was for a client-accounting matter.

  • Fixed an issue where the Clients and Matters pages would cutoff when printed.

  • Fixed an issue where the matter dropdown on the Trust Account page could be cutoff by a frame on the page, if the page didn't have enough data on it.

  • Fixed an issue where no fixed fee templates would appear in the template dropdown if your firm only had 1 fixed fee template.

April 6, 2023

  • Fixed an issue where the “billable” checkbox was not set to the correct default in some cases.

April 5, 2023

  • Fixed an issue where edits made to the customer/subcustomer of an expense in QuickBooks would sometimes not apply to the expense in LeanLaw.

  • Added a new button when creating a new matter with a Fixed Fee billing type which will create the matter and immediately open the first fixed fee for that matter.

  • Fixed an issue where the description for the Internal Notes feature duplicate the phrase Internal Notes.

April 4, 2023

  • Fixed an issue that caused drafts for some matters to fail to be made into invoices while Automated Trust Statements was enabled.

  • Fixed the allocation order for the user-level "Responsible" allocation setting, located in the Reports Settings page. Before, this setting would apply allocation settings based on the working user's settings, then allocate the revenue to the responsible user on a matter. Now, this setting will allocate the user's work directly to the responsible user, and then apply the responsible user's allocation settings.

  • Fixed an issue where step-by-step invoice creation would sometimes apply a payment link to an invoice memo even when the firm had the No Payment Link in Memo setting selected.

  • Fixed an issue that caused draft invoices to be cut off when printing them from the Drafts page.

April 1, 2023

  • Fixed an issue where expenses created in QuickBooks weren't showing up on the Expenses page to be assigned.
